I am a total newbie, and would appreciate any input!!! I've read a lot here and just can't figure what gear would suit best.

Currently for mics I have a Shure 57 and AKG c1000s. I'll be going into a digital recorder, and have a presonus blue max for compression.

Has anyone had success recording didgeridoo? It seems a difficult instrument to capture, having a low fundamental drone, lots of mid vocal range sounds, trumpet toots and lots of rich harmonics in the high end.

What reasonably priced (up to $300) mics would be able to do this instrument justice?

I've recorded two digiridoos so far (in North Texas - go figure), and here's what worked for me:

I put the dig player in the corner of the room. I used a small diaphragm condensor mic about 1 foot out from the end, and about 6" off to one side. I used a second small condensor about a foot above the players mouth and about 6" out to record some of the breath sounds and mixed the two together. I wound up using mostly the mic out at the end of the dig. I got plenty of breath from that.

You can try the C1000s that you already have, but if they get too "spitty" sounding, I'd go with a pair of Oktava MC012s, or Marshall 603Ss, or Crown C700s - all of them are within your $300 budget for a pair.
