Mics and the J station

I'm just getting back into the whole recording thing after almost a decade and am pleased to find all the new technology. I'm thinking about trading in my old vestax 4 track and Rockman for Cakewalk's "Home Studio 2002" and a J Station and going to town with them. One problem - my only mic is a SM57 and (needless to say) sounds like crap through the computer without any phantom power. I'm wondering if anyone has run their mics through a J Station or maybe a POD to preamp the mic instead of a separate unit for the mic alone. Obviously, I'll be able to test this out myself but I was just wondering if anyone else thought of it and had tried it. Being a bit of a minimalist, it would thrill me to no end to get away with one CDROM program and a single preamp/processor and still be successful.

Thanks,

MikeM

I dont think phantom power is what you wanted to say...the sm57 is a condenser and doesnt need FP, just a preamp...and yes, Ive run it through my J-Station....did it for awhile before i got a real preamp......you can get a usable sound, but a real preamp makes a world of difference.....I had used the preamps in my 4 track (as quite a few others did) but i found the J-Station did better......

the sm57 and J-Station are 2 Excellent choices.....i use both extensively.....

Im not a big fan of Cakewalk software but that package looks decent...it comes with Fruity Loops Express...i use Fruity Loops and its pretty good for drum parts......

with those 3 items, you are well on the way to amking some nice music.....

btw, what soundcard do you have?....if its a stock soundcard, youll find yourself wanting to upgrade it in the future, but whatever you have will do fine for now.....

I think you meant to say that the 57 is a dynamic mic.Condensor mics require a power supply, either phantom power or an onboard battery.
I also have a j-station but I ve never used it as a preamp. How were the results?Did you use it dry or for the superb effects?

Thanks all. I plan on getting a decent condenser mic in the future and updating my soundcard as well. I just wanted to know if it would work.

Any suggestions on reasonably priced condencer mics, mic preamps, or other PC recording software packages?

Thanks again,

MikeM

yep, im full of typos the past couple of days....Paxil anyone?......

Tom, both....I used the dry track feature and fed the S/PDIF dry and then the analog outs with compression and effects and blended them.....didnt sound half bad........

Mike I can make recommendations, but Id say jump into it before you spend a dime.......

Condenser - Marshall MXLv67 @ 149.00

Preamp - depend on what you are after...for a clean preamp, Delta Makes the Audio Buddy ($79 - 2 channels) and the DMP2 ($179 - 2 channels)....for a more colored sound the Art Tube MP is $89 and the Joe Meek VC3Q goes for $199 and is especially nice for vocals....
