If I wanted to work right from a 424 portastudio with the mics coming directly out of the machine and not an external machine like a mixer what kind of mics would you suggest I have a shure sm58 and an akg c1000s, will the akg work? It's a condenser but it has the capability of functioning as a condenser mic witha battery oprated function so it doesn't need phantom power. does that mean i can plug it into the 424 with a quarter inch and it'll still work? If so what other mics can anybody suggest I just want to get the best quality I can and I really like the portastudio so I wants some really warm sounding mics that aren't too too expensive like around 300-500 to plug right in and go.

Yes, you just plug these in, no problem. SM58, SM57 and the AKG are all good mics. You can also get an external phantom power unit and buy an Oktava 219 or 319. They run very cheap on ebay and sound very good, even not modified.

You may find that using a high-impedance or hi-z cable (or adapter), with your mics, is helpful.
