What is the average SPL that someone would use when micing a guitar cab? I have a large diapragm condenser that can handle upto 158dB. Will this handle the job? Thanks in advance.
Yes. 158 db is beyond the threshold of pain for humans. And though I have have been caused pain by many a guitar amp, it has been because of tone, not volume.
A fully cranked guitar amp will get right up there, well over 110 db, especially close mic'ed, but probly won't get to 158 db. Most guitar speakers won't put out that kind of volume anyway.
I mic'd my amp by mistake w/ another mic and was surpised that it was an interesting variation on the sound. You never know what you can do until you try it. It wasn't my old sm57.
Holy cow, that is some massive thread. New reading project!
