I'm setting up to do home recording, and of course, am a bit of a noob, but I have been doing my homework here and other places (so thanks to you and them) about what device will best suit my needs. ...and those are... built in instrument & percussion sounds, ability to write on a computer in cooperation with the unit, have midi 2 interfaces, have synth and sequencer abilities and be Mr midi controller. In studying all the available permutations of key/synth/midi it seems like I have come down to one device that fits the bill, which would be 5 bills actually... my decision tree dumped me into a Korg microStation......

Talk me into it, talk me out of it... I searched here for info , but the search came up with nada... thanks for any words of wisdom or otherwise...

I really like the MicroStation. The keys are pretty small, which can be a bit of a drag, I guess, but it has some really great sounds and it's small.

bullet bit, time to chew

So after a solid few days of reading and research, I pulled the trigger on a Korg mircoSTATION...

Last week Korg posted many training videos that go over the basic operations of the unit, which were very helpful in getting my head around what it can and can't do.

Here is a link to the 1st in the series on YouTube, and you can find the rest right there on their YouTube page.

I bought from SweetWater, in large part due to the custom set of patches that emulates a Hammonod B3 and tools built by them, that you can only get if you buy the microSTation from them... not sure what the value is but listening to the demo that Sweetwater made that shows off the B3 patches is impressive, it seems a given that one would want that added bundle....

In all the reviews I read the only huge drawback any of them had with it, was the mini-key setup, but with the caviat that it isn;t going to effect a non-keyboard player.... they all either rave about it. Any negatives are easily cushioned by the price tag and there is not much it will not do that I would ever need... "at this stage" ... I feel I have made a good equipment choice that gives me a wide range of capability in one affordable box... doesn't mean I'll get doodly-squat out of it, but that won;t be the tools fault.

if you get a need to follow me down this path... talk to Jorge at ext x1341... tell him I sent you and he'll say "who?"...:laughings: i was impressed with SW's ability to do price battle with the other folks and they have a decent amount of free info on their website.. fwiw...

That B3 software is pretty killer. What did you pay for the setup?

Sworn to secrecy, but it was less than they advertised, and I felt worth it over the Std offers of $499 from most other vendors, especially considering the free fed ex, and the SDCard with the B3 kit on it...

and yeah .. to have the controls mapped to simulate the way you would actually play a B3 is very slick.

having watched the tutorials once thru, I can also see that the operation is logical to me... I was warned that I would either "get" the way various companies implemented thier menu systems or it would drive me nuts... .I am lucky in that I used to program Telco hardware that had the same menu structure, which explains where all the old adtran techs went to...

Were the menus for various patches implemented by different companies or something? Or did he mean compared to other synths?

me no understand... can you rephrase that?? which "he" .. menus in the system or menu's in the custom B3 patch?? are we talking about the sweetwater video?

... damn am I hungry... time for left overs...

The person who warned you that the menu implementation might drive you nuts. Were they referring to various aspects of the MicroStation or just gear in general?

ahhh... clue failure... yeah... it was actually a thread here or maybe from Tweeks site... that all menu systems seem to be clunky at best, especially on budget level gear... they saving grace with the microStation seems to me to be the SW interface that allows the user to bypass the menu system on more complex tasks....
