Not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question.

Does anybody know what type of microphones where used to record Dave matthews acoustic guitar parts in DMB new album? There are videos of them in the studio on itunes or hulu with some pretty clear shots of the setup. Thanks.

A link would help us with specifics...but Id bet they used condencers.

AKG C12 on the vocals...its too hard to see what is used on the guitar from the angle of the picture.

There was only one on the guitar...and if I had to guess...it was a royer ribbon.

Tough to see it at first, but there's actually a pair on the guitar in an X/Y pattern (the camera is at an odd angle; the second mic looks like it's down by Dave's pant leg). I agree with the Royer supposition - the back of the top mic looks like the rear of a Royer R-121. Incidentally, the R-121's are typically sold in matched pairs for stereo mic'ing.

Hmmm...I thought they were stereo mics.

But I do agree...when you have a solo acoustic guitar it allways sounds better with stereo micing.

Almost. The Royer's have a Figure-8 pickup pattern, so they could be used to record, say, two vocalists facing each other. But they're not stereo - unless you use two, of course. :)

You guys are the best. I have been thinking about what mics I should buy to record my acousitic specifically, so i figured if thats what dave is recorded with, they have to be good. Thanks!!

The Royer's are great mics. But remember that the mic is only part of the equation - if the room, instrument, or performance doesn't match the quality of the mic, then the mic is pointless. An amazing mic in a poor room will still sound like a poor room...

I know it appears that there are 2 shockmounts...but there isnt 2 cables...I was thinking allong the lines of there being a 2 ribbon royer...there is a beyer that has 2 ribbons.

Whatchu talkin' bout? There are definitely two mic cables (you can see them form a "Y") Also, the mics are on a stereo mic bar.

Damn...I missed the lower one entirely...at least I got the make of the three mics right.
