Alright, i'm entry level, new to recording, but experienced (somewhat) in music.

I'm getting a new DAW, a firebox and an SM57.

I'd be recording Guitar electric/acoustic, and vox mainly, using DI bass.

I know the SM57 can handle everything, even vocals, but will it be better if i got a con mic?

I'm looking at those at maximum US 200 (my budget). I've seen the Behringer B1, is that good? Any other options?

Btw, i'm recording rock/metal (ocassional screaming, but thats like 30 secs for every 2 hours worth of songs)

will the 57 and B1 suffice?

I haven't used the Behri B1 but the Studio projects B1 is a great mic for very little money (I think it costs around the same as the behri mic).

If you only have 2 mics and not much money the SM57 and SP B1 would be a good couple of choices imo.

I'll second the SP B1 as that mic will make a great first LDC mic. If you'd like to hear it one of the mics used in this mic shoot out is a SP B1.

I won't tell you which one but I will tell you it isn't mic 1. It surprised me on how well it did though on vox. I have a couple of them and they do an outstanding job on acoustic guitar. Good luck.

The SP B1 is great for recording instruments, but I found the that the SP C1 is better on things like vocals. Another great vocal mic is the MXL V67...

If you're careful and look for used mics you should be able to get a both the B1 (for instruments and such) and a V67 (for vocals) for under 200 bucks. My 2 cents.

I have the c1 and i think it is a little too hyped on the high end. I'd recommend a adk a-51 type v. Very warm with a sweet silky top end without sibilance. That way, you have more control over the eq. My 2 cents.

don't get a behri mic, do get a condenser

edit: oh, and i would go with jkokura's advice

go to your user CP, on the "ignore" option, type in everyone that replied to this thread..once you have the right person on your ignore list, that persons negative rep wont show up..so youll know who did it...

So now i'd have to get 2 condensors? the B1 for acoustic and C1 for vox?

Can the B1 do all my vox too until i upgrade? I was planning to use Sm57 for vox as well till i get my condensor, but now, i'm convinced to get a condensor along with my dynamic.

I've checked, i will be able to get both at S$480 or US300. That's $80 over my budget for con mics.

You don't have to get the C1. The V67 is cheaper and is also a great vocal mic. If you don't want to go over budget get the B1 and the V67...unless you look at used mics, where your money will go farther...then get the C1. I like it for vocals a lot.

You can't realistically buy 2 mics and expect to have all your bases covered. I suggested the SP B1 because it's cheap and a bit of an all rounder (also it's great on acoustic guitar which is one of the things you want to record). It's not much of a vocal mic but it'll work until you can save up for something better. Who knows it might suit your voice anyway in which case for you it will be a good vocal mic.

After all a good mic is only really a good mic if it suits the source you're recording.

Alright.

I won't need anything for the 57,

and phantom power for the con mics right?

What about pop filters and shockmounts?

Someone did that to me on another thread. I guess some people don't want to give the courtesy for a reach behind.

Dang. I was kind of arrogant a few months ago! I apologize for that post.
