That's why you would to use some mics close-up as well as a few set back a ways. Then you can blend the sound of the close vs. distant to give you the desired amount of embience.

I think Deacon brings up some really solid points, and seems to have some really impressive insight on this subject.

The natural accoustics attainable in an actual concert hall will be worlds better than anything you'd get out of even the best software reverbs, by the way (that might actually wind up sounding more amateur if that's what you're worried about).

I would say 2 Ecm8000's, 2 603's, and 2 2003's. You are going 20 dollars over budget, but oh well. Also you might try the ECM8000's on the piano. Micheal Jones got ncie sounds with them a little while back. Are you doing a rehearsal with these guys?? Because it might take a few placements to get the best possible sound out of that piano.

there is no set 'rehearsal' time, but it's not a live performance either so there will be time to go over different mic setups as we will probably spread the recording over a couple days.

So 2 2003's on the piano, 2 603's on the violin, and to ecm8000's to pick up ambience??
