recently i bought a microphone off of musiciansfriend.com and tried it with a friend's 4-track. it worked fine and sounded great considering we were recording on a pretty old machine. i took the microphone home only to find that it wouldn't work with my computer.. if i try to record with audacity i have to turn the input volume up all the way, and then it will pick up loud noises just barely.

i have all the correct drivers for my soundcard, and just installed windows about a month ago. what could be wrong?

You need a preamp and/or phantom power for the microphone. Computer sound cards do not provide enough gain or phantom power (if it's a condenser microphone)

it's not a condenser, it's just a cheap Nady vocal mic i got for $15.

should work, i think.. i don't know what's going wrong.

Make sure you're using the mic in and not the line in

You MUST use a preamp. Period.

Mics do not generate enough voltage. A preamp raises the voltage to a useable (line-in) level.
Your friends recorder had preamps built in.
