I've been researching a bit and I came across a plugin that will make your (cheap) microphone sound like you've spent two grand on it.

Are those worth checking out? To be exact I was mainly reading on Antares mic mod efx.

Share your experience if you have dealt with this, thanks!

If it worked, people would just buy cheap mics.

Long story short, it's pretty worthless. It can certainly change the tonality of the signal (not unlike an EQ), but if you think it's going get the sound of a U47FET out of a SM57, you'll be very unhappy.

Or the Naiants.

And it also depends on your definition of cheap. If we're talking $300 or less as cheap, then a Cascade Fat Head and a used SM7b are both prime options. But in the sub $100 range, the SM57 (and Audix i5) and Naiants are about all that's worth it.

MXL V67g.
SM57
FatHeads

Those four will get you a LONG way for aorund $500 new for all of them. Much further than plopping down some cash on mic modding plug ins (I'd assume, I've never used an mic mod plugs).

I DON'T LIKE 57s. I have one but it's not my GO TO mic.
I LOVE my Naiant MH & the one with the micro tube - Orange Crush I think.
I have a range of cheapies that each have differing tonal/aural characteristics that I can reach for.
& I have an 20+ year old Dynamic that captures vocals really well.
I've used a plug to give one mic some of another's characteristics. It was interesting but really not much use. I did use it to try to address some of the bad characteristics of a particular mic by converting it to a semblance of one that is supposed to be particularly nice on vocals. the net result? Mud!
