Hello,

I have been lurking for a while and thought I would try to add something constructive to this great site.

I had my wife sing into 6 different mics using a ART MP (with a Groove Tube replacement), into a AW4416. I uploaded 3 of the mic test last night and I will add the other 3 latter today.

Mics Uploaded last night:
Gefell M71
NT1000
MXL V69m I replaced the Marshall tube with a Telefunken 12AT7

I will add the following mics:
CAD Equitek II
SM81
Behringer B2

I can't listen to these clips at work but I'm interested to hear the samples.

completed uploading the last 3 mic sample files....

Let me know what you think....

I'm thinking ribbon mics. Or at least a good dynamic.

Of the samples you posted I'd say the MG and MXL were the best, and the Behringer definitely the worst (way too shrill on the high notes, though that's relative since the high notes kind of grated regardless of the mic; just more so with the B2).

What exactly are we comparing here?

I think I like the nt1000 or the M71's sound the most.. Sound the clearest and purest, other mics had a bit too much mids or lows in them.. These 2 sound exceptionally well though.. nice goin with the test though..

Ps: jus listened again, definately the nt1000 I think did the best job..

What version of the tube did you select? Was it simply a standard 12AT7? I am asking beause I'm thinking of replacing the tube in my V69 with a telefunken ECC801S.

Hello,

"What exactly are we comparing here?"

I am new so go easy...thanks.

I thought someone might be interested in the hearing the different tonal qualities of the microphones listed above using my wife as the test subject. Same distance, no EQ and no effects.

"I'm thinking ribbon mics. Or at least a good dynamic"

My wife is considered a 1st soprano, with a lot of volume. (you know those super high notes you hear come bellowing out of the soprano section of the choir at the end of most songs). I have to use the "Toob" preamp on any mic I listed above (other than the MXL 69) or the sound is brittle, harsh or shrill. I have a couple of SM58s and a SM57 I will try to get her to sing the same cut again on the dynamics and hear the difference.

I think the tube I used to replace the tube in the MXL 69 was a standard Telefunken 12AT7. The replacement was kind of tricky as I had to nearly disassemble the whole thing. I called Marshall tech support and the guy was kind enough to help me.

I will post a couple more track bits of a girl singing on the NT1000 in an ALTO vocal range. I will see if she will mic test all of the above mics in a much lower vocal range. Would that be something you guys would be interested in?

Thanks...
Rob

I added another song to the above listed site (Star of Bethlehem). It might surprise you because of the mics I used on this live recording at church.

3 women and one man singing and another fellow playing acoustic. I used the Behringer B2 in omni with the singers gathered around the mic in a horse shoe shape. I miced the acoustic with the SM81 at about 6 inches distance where the neck meets the body.

What do you think?

I tried the EV267as Dynamic into RNP and RNC to the AW4416. I got my wife to sing the same song, I am afraid to ask her again ...LOL
Small sample listed at:
www.soundclick.com/bands/0/robinredbreastmusic.htm

Let me know what I can do to improve the sound...

Thanks in advance...
Rob

BTW...I have posted a pic of the EV267as mic position I used.

These 2 sound exceptionally well though..
English! Have you been blowing smoke up my ass!?

Broken link

Rob,
The link to the recordings gives me a "404 Not Found". Are these still available? I'd love to listen to them!

Also, your comment on the Star of Bethlem recording makes me curious. What mics do YOU grab first for vocal recording?

All God's best to you,
Martin
