I have ordered a THD univalve. I like to try to record in the future using Microphones. I live in an apartment, so only low levels are possible. I hear that in this case it's best to get a condensor mic instead of the Shure-57 dynamic mic, since dynamic mics tend to have a higher noise floor.

Can anyone advise on this and also recommend any condensor mics?

Thanks.

I use a Mesa Dual Rectifier Trem-o-Verb half stack, and I have recorded in an apartment for years at low levels. You can use an Sm57.....Just mic it right at the grill.
I have had really good results using a Groove Tubes GT-55 LDC for low(er) level amp micing, I place the mic about three feet away slightly off axis and get a real thick tone. I "usually" prefer that to the 57.

good luck

I have tried mic'ing my amp with both a SM58, and my AT4040. With the 58, I put it right on the speaker grill cloth, and with the 4040, 1-3 feet away. Just have to play with your particular arangement. I have gotten better sounds from the 58, probably just because it's real close. And I will admit I haven't found a sound I am really happy with yet, as I still have to play with eq a bit. I play at a moderate level, in a 12x12 room, sitting about 3 feet from the amp. I don't know if that level would be too loud in an apartment setting. I've turned the amp way down, and the pre way up, and the 58 seems to be less prone to picking up extra noise when doing this. The condesor is pretty sensative in that situation, and pics up more outside noise.

Just my observations, but hope this helps a little.
