Hey guys, i'm doing a demo for my band right now, and i have the creative platium 5.1 (live!) card...which i am using along with my onboard card to give me four tracks of audio (i'm just 17 and am still trying to learn some stuff here) i am having lots of problems getting a good sound out of my kit. i have 5 sm-58's and 1 57 along with a peavy cheap ass mic...which i try to avoid using but heres my existing setup. we tried the 57 on the guitar amp but we jsut can't find a good sound...it sounds sweet through the head phone mix, and live...but on the recording it sux. so we just did a direct out of his pedel for that cuz it sounded the same...58 on the bass amp (decent sound) 58 on bass drum floor tom and rack tom, as well as the snare. for over heads i used the sm 57 and the peavy bottom of the line mic. everything just sounded bad...we have done recordings b4 with this setup and did better..this time round it didn't sound as good...and we were shooting for an even better recording this time. i am possibly gonna go rent a kick mic (if i have to...) and a gatinglimitingcompressing unit for the drums. now is this a good setup? y
...should i get the kick mic..etc. should we eq before hand (as we have done in the past) or should we leave it all flat and eq later. or do both...? i have the use also of a 16 band stereo eq...and the mixer that we are using has a sweet on-board one (actually two) so yup i can have eq's for every instrument...and two for the drums if need be (r & l or whatever) what should i do? if we need to we can spend a bit of money to rent...but of course we want to do it as cheeply as possible....but we want the best we can get too. I am gettting a lot of ringing on my toms...so would some compressing be good for that? i may need to re tune them...i like the deep sound...but also..the pop sound of dry bright drums. (deep kick..deep toms...and a bright kick woudl probably be ideal for me.) i will proabbly end up going out and getting new skins for my toms and snare too....snare forsure. i use a pearl forum kit. (used to have it sounding a lot better) but yah and the guitar is also a problem as i had mentioned...we get a really ugly sounding recording of it. will these mics do? woudl we be better off micing the guitar? i normally try to mic where i can rather than direct in...but i only have so many mics...and this way i prevent bleeding of the drums into the guitar track. also the mics are good for the bass? thanks to everyone who posts anything in response. i really apreciate the time anyone puts into helping me! ttyl
