Micing/guitar Qs

First off I have PRS Standard guitar, and a Peavey Bandit 112 amp. I am going to use a Shure SM57 mic to mic the amp, and I am using a Tascam MK III.

how should I go about this? I mean, everything, guitar pickup, amp settings, guitar settings, volumes, mic placements, MK II settings, just clue me in on everyhting to get the best possible recording quality. Also I am recording this onto a Maxell Hi Bias tape 60 minutes I beleive.

Also all the same questions but applying to a Dean Acoustid/Electric guitar. Also should I mic an amp for that, or jsut the acoustic guitar hole?
 
These are a lot of questions. Get your amp sounding good and then mic it. As for your acoustic, might be a bit boomy at the sound hole try a foot back at the 12-17 fret.
 
Something that i often forget is that the best way to really do and learn this stuff is to experiment. Tapes cost nothing The cost of wear and tear on you recording is nothing in comparison to what you will know if you just try a few different settings, angles and distances. If you plan on adding reverb later then i'd suggest trynig to get the cleanest (with out natural room-echos) signal possible, if you are recording it as a solo instrument then maybe it would be best to set the mic farther away so that you can get some of the natural reverb in your setting. -

I suggest putting on some headphones and listening to differences. Not knowing can be a good thing - Maybe you will come up with a new miking technique.

once you get the amp's settings where you want it, try the mic in various positions. Directly in front usualy gives it more treble, I like amps mic'ed at the sides and sometimes towards the back about a foot or two away, this gives me more bassier, smooth sound. You'll just have to try different mic positions until you find the right one.

one last question. Where should I palce the amp? I mewan, on a cabinet? on an amp stand? which I have, angled? I mean, right now its on the carpetted floor in the center of a wall.... Is there some unknown stuff I should know about amp placement? or does it not matter?

I mean, how are your amps placed? and how does it effect the sound... I know experimentation is good, but Id still like to know :)
 
I mic the amp sitting on the floor about six inches from the wall. I use an EV N/D757 and have been pleased with the results. I try different mic placments all the time. The basic rule of thumb is start with the mic pointing straight into the speaker halfway between the middle and outside edge of the cone.
 
There will be more bass present if the cabient is on the floor. But really with close micing techniques the position of the amp in the room should be a negligable factor to what the mic hears. In other mic positions it might be best to get the amp away from the walls and off the floor, depending on the sound you are going for.
