Micing drums

Will one on the kick one overhead through a pre-amp create a good sound? (I really don't want to get more than two mics, and I just want a pretty good quality sound like early John Bohnnam (Led Zeppelin) stuff.

i think they used more than two mikes - they did compress the ambience mikes a lot though

you can get a good sound with 1 mic...but its gotta be a damn good mic and preamp....i like 3-4 mics....stereo overhead amd kick at least....snare if you bring in a 4th.....

To be honest, what I have been playing around with is a $40 mic and a custom pre-amp and my MF-P01, and it doesn't sound bad! All I think I need is another mic to spread the sound out better.
