My band is working on a new demo. We play metal. Its all being done on a boss br-8. The guitars and everything sound really nice but I'm worried that the demo might get ruined by a shitty drum quality. We have an overhead mic that pics up the cymbals really well (we already tested it out) and our guitarist recently bought some vocal mic that actually sounded pretty damn good in the bass drum when we mic'd it. (yea i know thats hard to believe but it amazed me)
Also, theres this dude with a dm5, but he has homemade triggers. I was wondering if those homemade triggers are really any good. Ive heard about them many times on the internet but im still not sure about them. The guy says he made them out of mouse pads with radioshack transducers glued to them or something. He says they work just as good as some of the ones that roland makes. Is he trying to blow smoke up my ass? Should i try to like rent some good mics or something? do music stores rent out mics and triggers?
Sorry for making such a long ass post. Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

for metal where the drums are heavily effected I'd go with your friends triggers and D5 - with one overhead and a kick you'll never get near a metal drum sound
cheers
