There are plenty of LDCs spec'd to handle up to 135dB SPL and therefore can handle such tasks just fine. The "general rule" of not using LDCs for high SPL stuff is just plain erroneous.scorpio01169 said:why is it bad for the ldc to be up close to the grille?.....i 've done it many times and no problems ever with my mic. i know he's using a 609.
I think it may be a mis-translation of the idea that (until recently) LDCs tended to be on the more expensive side and also tend not to travel as well. For these reasons, you won't often find an expensive Neumann on stage; you're better off keeping that investment in the studio where it won't get dropped into a puddle by a stoned roadie. Since on stage is where the high SPL stuff is normally going on (amps tend to be tamed down in the quality studio), this was mis-translated into "don't use LDCs in high SPL environments."
