Hi,
Sorry if this has been discussed previously, could you point out what would what be a better budget mic to mic an early 60s guitar combo (mostly clean, sometimes overdrivven). I'm currently looking at i5, sm57, e609 etc.... as well as some cheap nady or apex ribbon mics. Any thoughts?
Thanks! :)

What does your current mic collection look like?

I've gotten very workable tone from my Heritage archtop and Fender Blues DeVille using just an e609, but I like to throw a large diaphragm condenser on there as well, to add a little bottom end to the sound.

Mostly ribbons over here, especially for cleaner stuff. It just seems to capture the message the amp is putting out better without adding a huge "stamp" of it's own, there's a stamp for sure, but less so than if I'm working with a 57 or 609. A 421 can be pretty nice too.

Right now I got some noname dynamic (which is garbage) and an AKG C3000B, which is nice but captures too much room. I'm thinking of combining it with something.
I record on tape (no computer or digital stuff involved).
So, if I get a very cheap ribbon (Nady/Apex) would that do a better job than a dynamic (609/i5/57/421)?
I understand that there's no right or wrong here, just want to get some feedback or what to consider.

MD421....RE20.....Kel HM1.....Audix i5.....Beyer 500........

A ribbon will need a lot of push, a dynamic, not so much. Senn 421
Beyer 201 or anything Beyer really, RE20 or 27, if you can scrape a coupla bucks together, grab Shure SM7. It is, without a doubt, the most used mic in my cabinet. It can do anything (cept maybe overheads, never tried tho)

I love the at2020 for overdriven guitar, the audix I5 is great too.

Apex 205 is a great choice for an inexpensive ribbon mic, and works great for guitar cabs.
