Micing a Piano

The piano could cost over $2000, alone.

.................

a) get a good piano
b) get at least two condensers. i just mic'd a piano with a Rode NT5. I only had one mic at the time, but the piano sounded really good through it. NT5s come in a pair and definitely worth the price for two small condensers. If micing a grand piano, i recommend putting one near the higher strings about a foot away from the hammers (the opposite way of the keys). And then another around the same place but on the lower strings.....maybe even further away from the hammers to allow the lower waves to have time to resonate.

Thanx^^^
Cool, anybody else with suggestions???

edit: also let me let folks know my intentions. I plan on using piano tracks to add to drum samples, so more than likely, I will not mic a piano in a studio, just bring the piano tracks to add.

So you want to mic a piano but you don't know the difference between a grand piano and an upright piano....

um.......... You gotta start somewhere

This is a help-me-out thread, that didn't help, thank you.

I just went through this on a session. Let me just recommend one thing for sure, use an omni-directional pattern/mic. It's sooooo much more natural than everything else. Unless you're going for some crazy sound. Then do whatever you want.
