in the 5X6 room, find the best sounding speaker on the cab.....mic it with the sm57 off axis from the left, the 421 off axis from the right, both right on the grill......mic the room sound with the beyer....use the different characteristics of each mic to blend them together......

Once again, differences in opinion, but here is my take... using a 57 on a cabinet when you have ribbons available is almost crazy... I would try the m160's and the m500's on the cab 1st, a few inches back, depending on volume levels. After I tried those, my next choice would be the Beyer M88 (which I would like to buy off of you if you would like to sell it, that OR a m160), followed then by the 421's and then the sm57. The 57 would be my last choice, but thats just me. The 57 is a great guitar mic when those others arent present, but personally I would never even get around to the Shure if I had the others. YMMV.
Sell me a Beyer! :) musikaldude@aol.com
Peace.

Since you have two m160's, try stereo micing the guitar in an XY, might sound really nice. Just dont get too close to a loud cabinet with ribbons, you can blow them with too much air movenment.

If the room is too live, throw a packing blanket over the cabinet. and mic... helps get rid of that hollow room sound.

anything wrong with having more options when mixdown comes?......

Nope. :)
Still waiting on GUY to sell me an m88, though. I need it.

Gidge, I flew into New Orleans for a few hours last month.. that place looked like water and low fog with occasional land. From up really high it looks like 80% lakes everywhere in the state. Is the whole state that way all the time (foggy and dreary I mean?) or was it just that day?
Wish I could have stayed long enough to see something, or steal your gear. :)

It just hit me he was asking about jazz... I dont know that i would even mic it directly, I dunno... never tried to/had to with a jazz group... it seems you would want to get a good setup in the room, place an omni just right, and record it just like that. That seems like how jazz sounds to me most of the time... like 3 dudes in a small, dead-but-good room with a Neumann in omni into a Great River or something. Real clean but ambient. Make any sense? I dunno... when it comes to rock guitars I get the best tones in town... :)

is there anything you DIDNT cover in the big thread?...:D

tubedude,
i dont think i have anything youd like to steal:p but you should have told me you were there.....we coulda tore up Guitar Center for a bit.....

yeah i missed the jazz part....i saw Marshall 4 X12.....cant say id let a jazz player play thru a Marshall.....maybe thru my J-Station.....

yes that what i said as well but i was amazed to find some depth in this guitarist that his fender twin never showed, anyway this guitarist (that I don't want to name) is getting the amp free from marshall since he promoting them (he is quit famos here in the european jazz scene.
we as musicians and sound lovers shouldn't be surprised that easily :)
