i have only started to build a home studio. and still in the process of getting needed equipment to call it a studio. i bought oxygen 8 last week and reason with cubase also. now im looking to get some hardware. im looking to pick up a mic and a pre amp. im a guitarst so should i buy 2 mics or will one do. i am on a budget. also how vitial is a pre amp to the set up. and if so which would be a good purchase

You will definitely need at least one mic and a preamp to record to your computer. Instead of a stand-alone preamp, you could also get a small mixer, which has several pres in it. That need is dictated by the number of sources (mics) you want to record simultaneously (which is also somewhat limited by the number of inputs on your soundcard).

On a tight budget, you could get away with a Shure SM57 mic and an Audio Buddy preamp. If you'll be recording acoustic guitars, you may want to get a condenser mic, instead of/in addition to the 57. You could get the MXL 990, Studio Projects B1, MXL V67g or similar for about the same price as the 57. Other cheap preamps to look at include the M-Audio DMP3, Rane MS-1B, or Studio Projects VTB-1. For a small mixer, the Yamaha MG series are supposed to be decent and not too expensive.
