I just came across this video. it's a good source to see the difference in sound you can get just by changing mic position. I'm not endorsing the player, the gear, or the guys who made the clip. It's just for info purposes.

It's interesting. And useful to hear the tonal differences. I do sometimes wonder if we don't sometimes go a bit overboard on it though.
By the way, at the bottom of the clip are some interesting clips on recording electric guitar for anyone interested.

What wasn't posted was using two microphones and combining the two tracks together for an even different flavor of your sound....like mixing chocolate and vanilla ice cream... on one cone...yum!
