Hi. I got a studio projects c1 that i use for rap vocals. It's an excellent mic but i would like a mic more suited to the sound for rap vocals. The C1 is a little bit too bright and not as up front as i would like it to be for rap. Does anyone have any suggestions on a mic? My gear list is below.

I use the MXL V63 in my studio. It's been great for me. I copped it for $300 way back in the day. You can cop it for $100 now.

The RODE NT1 is a decent mic as well.

I wouldn't recomend a SM58 at all. It's a dynamic mic, and not suited for recording lead vocals unless you're looking for it's specific sound. It's a great performance mic, though.

But it really depends on your budget as well. The next mic I plan to pick up is the AT4050. Such a dope mic.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I been thinkin about that sm58 but i haven't had a chance to try to record with it. We have some at my church. Imma ask the pastor if i can hold one until bible study night. I'm the church musician/asst. sound man so he'll probably let me hold it. Been hearing alot about those marshals but never had or hear one. I've heard of the mxl v67 and v69 but never heard of the v63. Imma search for that tonight. I been workin ever since i last posted on this thread. I am tired and i smell like chicken and fry grease. My freshness has been ruined! If anybody else has more mic suggestions or can elaborate on some of the ones folks have posted, please do so! Thanks again!

Hey change, you got some stuff i can hear with the mxl v63 used for vocals? I'm very interested to hear it. Thanks!

I know what i want now. Mxl V69 mogami edition. The way people describe the sound, that's what i'm lookin for. Warm but intelligible, with a nice high sizzle that's not brittle fo shizzle my nizzle. I'm hooked like a fish on bait. I've GOTTA sell some beats so i can cop this mic. I gotta sell beats period. I want all the money to go back into the studio ya know. I got gigs of beats that i've made over the past 2 years that i can sell.

"I'm motivated to get that paper so i can spit rhymes so hot that they evaporate into clear vapors."(tried to make a hot line, lol)

Well how about a Neumann TLM-103 paired with an Avalon 737...

But on my budget a BLUE Baby bottle...

I use a Shure KSM27 mostly now but I got enough mics laying around to pretty much cover any voice that comes in the door.

Slow down cuz. I don't have avalon and neuman money. Sure would be nice tho!

I used to have a KSM27, I loved that mic!

tone, check my website www.soulintent.com and the streaming audio was all done on my MXL V63.

Sounds good, but that's not the sound i'm tryin to get right now. I want that warm in your face sound that is intelligible, not muddy. People describe the v69me as being like that. Nice songs though. I like the mixes.

The V63 isn't muddy at all, fam. You should really read the reviews on it. It's only so cheap in price because it's been on the market for so long.

When I bought it, it was over $300... about the same price as my KSM27 from Shure.

If you'd like me to post an a capella so you can hear the mic clarity, I could do that for you.

check this site: www.barwarsproject.com

That whole EP was recorded at my studio, on the V63 as well. The mixes on those tracks are MUCH nicer than the ones on my site.

Thanks for the replies. With alot of experimenting with mic position, distance from mic, preamp volume, bit/sample rate, and switching on the low-cut filter, i'm really close the sound that i was tryin to get. Regardless, i would still like to buy the m-aduio dmp3 because i think i would get exactly what i'm looking for out of it.
