I just picked up a pair of Oktava MK012s at guitar center too on sale this weekend. I want to use them in X-Y configuration to record acoustic guitar and I am wondering the best way (in terms of mic stands) to set this up. I.e. is there a stand that will hold both of them or do I need to buy two mic stands or what?

You can find a plate that screws onto the end of a mic stand and has two mic stand threads on the top. That will let you pivot the two mics into position and then move them around together. Two mic stands for XY mic'ing is a pain to move around and reset position.

I think you can find the adapter (to put 2 mics on one stand) in the $15-$20 range,

Like Tbass said, it is much easier to move around than two stands. However, it limits your mic placement (since the two mic's are always a fixed distance from each other) which may compromise finding the right spot(s).

In addition, other than stero mic'ing a guitar - or for two vocalists (which you would likely want to have more seperated) the adapter tends to be a one trick pony. Whereas, and extra mic stand can always be put to use for, whatever.

The "plate" they are describing is called a stereo mic mount, and can be had for $10 at GC. That is compatible with the mic clips that come with the Oktavas. If you want to shock mount them (a very good idea for drum overheads), GC is selling shock mounts for them, but the ones I've looked at suck. For more money, the Sabrasom universal stereo mic mount sold by The Sound Room at www.octava.com works very well, although the kit is a little pricey. It can, however, be adapted to fit almost any mic, or pair of small mics.-Richie
