SO i want to record drums on my digital system (sonar) but I am very limited on mics. I have an SM57, SM58, and 2 budget dynamic mics. With what I have, what would you recomend for my setup on drums? Thanks a bunch

It would help to know a bit more info.
a)How many inputs your sound card has.
b)Do you have any stand alone preamps?/Or are going to use a submixer?
c) what style of music are you wanting to record.

I am a recording drummer and I have successfully recorded with as few as 2 mics depending on the Genre of music.(1 on kick / 1 on snare)

Up to 10 inputs, stand alone preamps. Fast rock, lots of cymbol sounds, and toms. 5 mics, where should they go. Thanks again

i wouldnt recommened recording ewith those, doesnt sound like it would be to good

a few thoughts

Remember that the room itself is going to have a huge affect on the final sound and getting the drums to sound good (the way you want them to) live in the room is essential.

Don't count on fixing a bunch of stuff in the mix.

Try a lot of different mic placements (inches and angles really do matter). And work on recording the drums alone without the rest of the band, so you know exactly what you are going to get.

Sometimes when recording with just a few mics, placing one somewhere behind the drummer is a really good idea in terms of filling out the sound. It also captures the sound from the drummer's point of view.

Be willing to experiment. And be willing to invest time into trial and error. Best of luck!

ok....
So I'm thinking about putting a mic on snare, mic on kick, mic on floor tom (he uses it a bunch) and the other 2 kind of overheads. What do you think?

We need Fletcher to jump in on this thread. He's a big fan of using mismatched mikes as overheads and has far more experience with doing so than any of us peons probably do.
