Hello!

So i'm creating a mini-studio in my apartment, i just finished turning my walk-in closet into a semi-iso room big enough to house a full drum kit (:D) and am recording primarily with sm57/58s.

I also just purchased an M-Audio Sputnik. I'm currently using a M-audio project mix as my recording interface with Logic 7 (soon to be logic 8) and ProTools M-powered 7.

I would like to use an independent preamp for my sputnik, i feel like a tube pre would be a little overkill as the sputnik is a tube mic as it is, I know a little bit about various pres, but i cant decide what to spend my money on. Right now i'm watching a couple M-audio tampas on e-bay and will pick one up if its relatively cheap.

My budget for 1 mic pre is $200 (although i'll spend $300 if i can find a stereo pre worth buying)

P.S. I'm not an M-audio fanboy or anything ive just ended up with alot of m-a gear by circumstance :)

As long as you're into the M-Audio thing, it may be of no coincidence that one of few (very, VERY few) mic preamps in that price range that isn't complete [SELF-CENSORED] is M-Audio's DMP3.

A used Tampa wouldn't be the worst thing either.

If you can find a RNP, Grace 101 or True P-Solo in a similar price range (or just save up a bit longer), you'd be in a different universe.

Yeah, don't bother going tube unless you're going to spend a grand. The DMP3 is the best bang for your buck under 300. I have an RNP and it's pretty good, pretty clean and tranparent

Thanks for the advice guys!

just put in a bid for a DMP for $120 :D

i'll find out if i got it in a few hours

didnt win it :(

I think i'm gonna shell out for a tampa though, I only really need one right now, I can get the second when i need it

SweetwaveAudio.com quoted the DMP3 for 138.99 - at B&H it's 140... [it's 160 everywhere else] & it's def. on my Xmas list

And, unlike e-bay, you get a warranty for the extra 10 bucks or so. At that kind of differential, you may as well buy new.

The M-Audio Tampa is a very nice pre. If you're looking for one better channel for vocals then I'd say the Tampa is a little better than the DMP3. It has more features for shaping your sound. I have both and love both.
The Sputnik is a nice mic and if you have a good space to record in then either the Tampa or DMP3 will give you excellent quality! If you can't get a good sound with these then it's not the hardware.
