Then ditch the TLM-103, get the thickest, warmest-sounding mic you can afford, and plug it in to a dmp3 or similar.

Spend your money where it really counts. That ain't a very thick and/or warm sounding mic, in my not-very-humble opinion.

you should get the A design mp-2 its only 1250...

the preamp doesn't count? i'd rather have a great preamp and an ok mic then the other way around...i hardly think a dmp3 would make a neuman m149 or whatever sing the way a it should sing...but i could be wrong

An m149 through a dmp3 would still sound . . . like an m149. :D I'll take it any day of the week, and I'm sure I'll be able to make it work. :D

I like the Great River alot.. I'v never used the A Designs .. it would prob. do a good job...I agree with the 103 sentiments..too hyped/brite for my tastes, but thats me:)

so which mic would you say would yield better results for the sound hes after?

To me..Great River and a KSM44..The clearity/nutrality of the 44 lets you really "drive" the Great River{depends on how you work}..they pair up nicely IMHO..But you gotta listen for yourself to know.Only you know the sound your lookin' for in your head..If that makes any sense:) Good luck
