Looking for dual mic pre ($1000 per channel that i can buy one at a time, hopefully) to contrast my avalon 737. I want to use it mostly for drum overheads (km184s) and to have moreoptions when recording anything else. I tried out a Great River ME-1NV from a local store (they were kind enough to let me try it for free and return it n a day). To me, it sounds fuller then the 737 on acoustic guitar, but i didnt try it out on anything else. I know eventually i will wear out my welcome taking their gear home to try out, so please make some suggestions for a preamp.

What am I after on the overheads? Transparancy is good I guess, but i bet the Great River would sound good on drums even though it is a colored sound. Thanks in adavance for the info.

How about an FMR RNP for less than half the price ($425)? Very transparent... a wonderful choice for overheads.

I love my A designs MP-2. i'll be posting some tracks that i used it on pretty soon.

$425? Where? I haven't seen it anywhere for less than 475.

oh yea, Ive got a ART TPS dual pre.......so how far ahead in quality are the RNP and MP2?

If you want to build a nice collection at aprox $1k per channel, I'd get an API lunchbox and start filling it up.

The Phoenix Audio (UK) DRS-2 $2150 is incredible on OH's. Transformerless input makes it very fast. You can also get a DRS-1 for just over $1K. I wouldn't buy separates if you know you want two.

OTOH, rather than buy one at a time, there are other alternatives that are around $1K or less for 2 channels. Any of these is excellent.

Sytek MPX-4Aii $800ish - Transformerless, very fast and transparent. 4 channels.
A Designs Audio MP-2 - $1250. All-tube, fairly clean. Monster bass DI
Sebatron vmp-2000e - $995. Colored tube pre. Excellent.
FMR Audio RNP - $475 - slightly colored, with an open, airy top.

you're saying that the A-designs mp-2 makes a good bass DI? Im using the 737 as a bass DI and it sounds pretty good. Im pretty tempted by the Great River NV (maybe just because its the only one ive gotten to fool with, and it sounds better than my Avalon to my untrained ears)..... but with the mp2, i get 2 channels for a little more than 1 channel of Great River.....decisions decisions.... ill check out as many of these pres as I can (MacMidiMusic is very kind to let me borrow their gear)

i appreciate the input. sometimes buying gear gets too addictive...

how do you feel about the Avalon 2022? Im looking for clarity, detail, and great bottom end without the trashy highs. Im sure i can get that for less than the 2022 costs....(sure is pretty though)
