just wondering with a budget of 250 about what should i be looking for in a preamp for hiphop vocals

also what do you guys think of a head to head between the mackie mcu and the yamaha o1x or is there a dark horse in the same range

Not to demean your suggestion, but Rane's lo-end pre's are somewhat "mid-rangy colored". A DMP3 is a decent performing pre. Transparent operation with little or no "hype" to a signal even when addtl gain boost is used.

I'm a big fan of the Peavey PV8 mixer. Pres sound extremely clean and unusually open. External power supply, so the SNR figures are also exceptional. $110 buys you four pres with phantom.

Has anybody done a shootout between those? For that matter, I'd love to see a general low-end preamp shootout. Last wave standing wins.

This may not (most likely not) be the answer your looking for but, if I were you, I'd save a little more and get an RNP. You're half way there. Just hold out and do your music a favor by sacrificing price for quality. There are enough guys out there sacrificing quality for price. Do it right the first time, dude.
