My band just put together a recording studio so we can spend as much time as we want putting cds together without having to worry about hourly costs. We have everything we need to record, but I'm wondering if we should invest in a mic preamp. What exactly do they do? Is it just a volume boost? Do they improve the sound of the mics? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

you need them for your vocals. they boost the signal without distorting it, so theyre pretty important. if your using a condenser for your vocals, then you will need a decent pre. What soundcard are you using for your set up?

All microphones require a preamp. Yes, it boosts volume, but it also converts your signal to a balanced, line-level signal necessary for recording. Most preamps also provide phantom power for condenser mics. If you are going to be recording, you'll definitely need a preamp.

a mic preamp are one of the things in the chain of audio that can make or break a sound.

true, it's job is to boost the signal coming from the mic, but not all mic pres have the same circuitry in them. Just like anything, usually the more money you spend the better quality parts it's going to have. And in audio, the better quality parts usually means better quality of sound. Some preamps color the sound to a perfect amount giving you just that extra "oomph" to your sound. Other preamps might have tubes in them...and as a guitarist will tell you, tubes can add warmth to the sound. And then you have crappy preamps that may cost you $50 for 4 of 'em, but again, just like anything else...you're sacrificing quality for quantity.

No, a preamp will not make just any microphone sound better. There is an audio chain that you have to be careful about. It first starts with the musician...if he's not good, the song will sound like crap. Next is the room, if the room sounds like crap, you'll get crap. Next is the microphone, then the preamp, then the A/D converters, and so on. If the microphone sucks, a great preamp won't do any good. But if the microphone is great, the preamp will make it sound just that much better.

what does you band already have in terms of audio gear? maybe someone here can point out something that you should invest in first before a preamp.

Yes a preamp is necessary, but chances are whatever equipment you have already has built in preamps that are quite usuable. The question is whether getting a nice dedicated preamp is going to take your recordings up a notch. List your gear that you already have

Right now we have an AT 3035 for vocals...the Shure PG series set for drums with an SM-57 for snare...we use the PG-52 for bass...and the SM-57 for guitars. Everything tonally sounds pretty good as of now, but we have noticed a significant lack of volume. We're using a DBX 266 compressor/gate and run everything through a Berhinger Eurodesk 3282A which runs through a Tascam US 122. We record with Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro and use KRK Rokit5's as monitors. We use a Dell Inspiron 9200 laptop with a SigmaTel C-Major Sound Card. I hope this is enough information to offer some good advice on pre-amps. We do need something decent, but cheap at the same time. Thanks.

Of course....maybe I should've asked what "cheap" is to you.

oops........
