I don't know if "quality mic pre" fits under 200 pezzutos. Maybe? The Grace 101 has dropped in price but it still runs near 500 new.
If you get a copy of TapeOP, which is free, you will see many mic pres advertised and at diverse prices; however, I don't think you will find anything that is "quality" for 200. You may find something that works all right; you need to scout around and when you pick a model, go to the proper forum and ask about the model.
Thanks for the info. It looks like I'll just have to be patient. $$ reasons. And BTW, Tapp is my name; however, that would be pretty cool to learn tap dancing...
for really cheap behringer have the mic100 for 50 bucks.
ive heard mixed reviws of it. some seem to like it, others....
alternatively take a course in electronics at night school like i did years ago and learn about op amps and transistors and fets - the building blocks of pre's and other studio goodies. i build my own preamps for a cost less than 20 bucks. if you want to hear the quality check out the song i'm too old to rock and roll at soundclick.com/bmanning and many others. if you want to compare with hi end studio consoles the song take my love was done using a big studio mega expensive console.
look at the taos mic pre schematic (google for it) as an example of one diy approach.
Yo Tapp! In that price range, M-Audio DMP-3 is just about the only game in town. "Quality" pres start at about $500 per channel, and top notch pres can run as much as $5000 per channel. Considering that, the performance of the DMP-3 is truly amazing.-Richie
Thanks, Richie. I'll definitely give that one a look. I've already got a good guitar preamp. The missing link to my studio is vocals. I need something to give me a good hot mic signal. Thanks again for the reassuring advice on that preamp!
