I'm buying my first recorder, a Fostex MR8 and will be recording acoustic guitar with a MXL 603S.

My question is should I buy the M-audio DMP-3 or get a mixer (Mackie 1202VLZ)? The MR8 has a mixer already and would rather spend the money on some decent monitors. Any significant difference in sound between the two preamps?

Thanks

I would just get the DMP-3 and save money for use toward monitors.

:D Yo Mike:

Give some thought to getting and RNC and then look at the Grace Design 101.
They do work great together.

Green Hornet :) :p :D

the other way.

sorry dude. i gotta go the other way here. but hear me out.
i think the mixer would do better right now, over the pre-amp.

the MR-8 does not have any way of adjusting the input. by using the mixer now, you will have eq/effects capability, plus the mon and aux sends. PLUS you will have the preamps Plus you will have phantom power.

now, note, the "MIXER" you think is built into the MR-8 AINT!. This is to mix recorded tracks. not to mix 7 things going into it (like on a tascam porta studio)

you know you will need each (monitors, mixers, effects, etc...) eventually,

but i think the mixer would be a smarter start.

what i can say, is develop a MASTER plan and decide where you want to go with the recording. THen buy what fits into the plan and can be used later as well.

good luck
