I walk the line
Is there a mic pre that you would recommend that works particularly well for male vocals on an sm-57? It would also be nice if it did well on an sm-7, too, but my primary concern is a 57. Male vocals, 'classic rock' to some, 'oldies' to others, along the lines of early Bad Company w/Pauls Rodgers, early Robin Trower w/Patrick Dewar, Greg Allman, etc. The cheaper the better, but I'd like to know what the expensive options are too, I guess.

Thanks

What's your budget? You need a fairly good pre to make the 57 shine. Something like the Great River 1NV (around $1000) would do it and would fit 'rock' style vocals well. A cheaper alternative maybe the RNP (around $500).

I don't have any experiences with any other pres unfortunately.

THE best mic pre for a 57 and an SM7 is the Groove Tubes ViPre. For some reason these two mics react well with it.But then most mics do.I'm going to be checking out "The Brick" sometime soon to see if it does the same thing with the dynamics.

Great River NV series mic preamps are probably the best bet for this sound. The FMR RNP is not a bad poor man's choice either.

RNP sm7 combo has more AIR then most mic pre SM7 combos but the highs can get a little brittle if not placed properly so proper mic placement is at a premium, and even then you might find it difficult to add hi's in the mix.

I like the A-designs MP2 better. very big clean sound not as airy as the RNP but can take processing (eq, compression) a HELL of a lot better

here's a SM7/RNP track. Its one of my older ones so I wasn't as knowledgeable then with tracking as well as the vocal booth was alot shittier.

FYI its rap

I have no experience with expensive pres, but the "starved-plate" tube drive on my Studio Projects VTB-1 ($130 new) adds more presence to my SM57 than it does to any of my other mics. I have not used it live yet, though it seems pretty sturdy.

Budget? What's a budget?

Well, unfortunately, Great Rivers are out the picture for now, as well as Vipres and Bricks, but I do want to know what to look for in the future. Something along the lines of an RNC or Grace 101, which still are way more than I should spend at the moment, are at least a little more do-able.

Michael, do they still sell API 312's? I just hopped over to Mercenary, but all I saw were 4-channel versions. Or do you have to find one used? I have terrible luck in the used market.

What about any Ranes? Don't forget, I'm talking specifically for the 57 for male rock vocals.

Thanks guys
