I HAVE A YAMAHA DIG 16-TRACK AND A SHURE 57 AND CAN ONLY SEEM TO GET A VERY WEAK SIGNAL EVEN WITH THE INPUT GAIN RIGHT UP.DO I NEED A MIC PRE-AMP?

ILL PAY HOWEVER MUCH IT COSTS TO GET A DECENT SOUND (WITHIN REASON)ALSO DO YOU NEED A SEPARATE UNIT FOR EACH MIC FOR LIVE STUFF?

Something isn't right here.
The recorder should have mic pre's built in and should be able to take the sm57 without out additional preamplification.
Depending on what model, you can have decent pre's or not.
AW4416 and AW2816 have better pre's than the AW16G, but is should still be more than adequate for what you need. If your getting a weak input on the Yamaha pre then its likely that your about to lose the channel because of improper usage of the phantom power. The opamp for the Yamaha pre's phantom section is not tolerant of having the dynamics plugged in or out when the phantom power is on. I have this happen last year.. Warrenty covered it. After you get the pre fixed, then you can pursue more and higher quality pre's. Bruces excellent advice on getting a pre negates the fact you've got a faulty pre in your yammie.

SoMm,Its an AW16G and I have t used the phantom power.Just found out it had it.
I can t find any mention of pre amps in the manual
