After micing the rest of this guys kit, all I have left over is a sm-58 and a mxl v67g. I know that people use two mics on bass drums to capture the pop (with a dynamic) and the bass tones (with the condenser). But what is the optimal distance and placement if you are going to be using two?

It too hard to say for sure without knowing more... like, is the front head on or off and etc... but it's never exactly the same anyway... so you've just got to move the mics around untill you find the sweet spots... try them everywhere, even the petal side and etc (but watch the phase). Good luck and most important... have fun.

Bass

I would use a D112 or likewise inside the bass just off the head 3-4" or less depending on how much of a "clicky"sound you want.
On the outside it depends on the porting.
A large port would be almost pointless in my opinion, but a small port would have more head vibration.
I would place it on the oposite of the port just of off the head.
I haven't tried micing the front head YET,...
