I usually use a 57 at the center of the cone up close or a DI. I can't mic any further away than that because I either track in a room with a suspended ceiling or I'm tracking live.
I thought it was superior response in high frequencies, which are usually associated with transients. Bass doesn't really have any highs worth mentioning.
well...i do a lot of one room recording...and when i try to cut from like 10K on up put to get rid of the annoying cymbal bleed on the bass mic...the bass tone most definitely changes. try it!
Good call Mike. The lack of highs in a bass signal is a pretty big myth. The seem to sound a little different, but even some pretty high frequencies leave a very noticable change on the signal as they are changed.
