I've searched the forum and I'm still confused on my issue. I have a Tascam 2488 and a sm57. Is it possible to use this mic to record vocals at all? I know the mic is much better for things like drums and cabs. When I try to use it for vocals I have to turn the trim pretty much all the way up to get any volume. So my question is: Do I need a pre amp and this mic will work for vocals or do I need a mic more intended for vocals? If I get a different mic intended for vocals do I still need a preamp? I'm strapped for cash right now and would only have like $100 to spend. I'm not looking for top notch quality right now. I want to be able to record some vocals to throw with an acoustic guitar and maybe some more rock type stuff. Thanks much!

the 57 can be used for anything. You are going to get a fat sound with it, so boost the highs before you record, and cut the low a bit after you record. (unless you have a voice like micheal jackson).

For a vocal mic 'better' than the 57, you are looking at at least $200. The studio projects C1's are about that, and they sound damn good for $200.

I don't know anything about the internal preamps on the 2488, but for a decent external you are looking at at least $100. And if $100 is all you've got right now, I would just rock the 57.

Borrow a pre & test it against the built in one.
Some built in pres are pretty nice others are hideous.
Try the Tascam threads for details.
