Hey ya!

I've got a talkback mic hooked to my pc. The "problem" is that if I want to mute or unmute the mic I have to stop playback (or recording) and go to the Volume Control screen to check the mute button. So can you make a switch or a button that would put the mic on and off? Or is there another way around this problem?

Thanks

Why not build a box with a switch in it. Have two plugs, one on each side and plug the mic on one side and plug the other to the input.

Solder the switch in series with the hot lead (of the mic)

Plug it up and voila'.

This is what I'm planning on building for mine.

Yeah, I had something like that in mind but I ain't that good with that electric stuff like soldering.

Oh you can get a pc mic that has the on/off switch built in for about 10$. Maybe I'll get one of those.

Thanks

Get a regular mic with an on/off switch, and use a xlr-1/4 cable then a 1/4"-1/8" adapter.

let me know if that makes sense

Yeah, it made sense. That could be one solution, but I think the problem with that is that I don't have a stand for the mic and I need to have my hands free. With the small pc mic you get the stand with it.

Thanks anyway

I have a simple little 1U analog mixer that combines the output of my console, with the output of a cheap, lame mic pre, and feed that into a headphone amplifier (oz audio HR-4 actually) which then feeds the headset of the vocalist. Its always live, and not patched into the main console at all.

Since the mic pre-amp was homemade, I put a "push to talk switch" on it. When the button is pushed, the mic is in the circuit. When the button is not pushed, the mic is out of the circuit and the mic pre inputs short together with a 1K resistor to mute it without a nasty thump in the headsets.

The 1U mixer also is feed the analog outputs of my tascam 202 deck, my CD player, my DVD player, and a variety of other output only devices.

Was just so much easier than wasting console busses just for foldback. Accomlishes the same thing, and the 1U mixer was laying around anyway and not worth much on e-bay, so why not.
