O.K., I was asked to master this rap/bass album and the guy mastered to 4 track and then gave me a cassette copy. Wow! What a bunch of noise. Taking a lot of time to clean up the noise. Really having to work with EQ and then effects to cut the hiss and then clean things up. May even have to dump into Sound Forge and see what could happen. Noise is almost as hot as the tunes, however.
Anyway, while experimenting I came across an interesting use of inserting a mic effect. I took the entire signal on each side, inserted like a 58-421 effect and dialed up Insert-S instead of just Insert. Only works on some tunes and you have to watch the bottom end, but I kind of liked it for a change. Unbelievable thump. Almost a rattle at any volume kind of deal. Watch out for the increase in noise, however, if doing a tape to digital transfer. Really can boost it if you're not careful.
Let me know if you all have tried this or something similar.
