Does lowering the mic input decrease detail in my recordings? Will recording at a low input and then amplifying it to a normal level decrease the quality of the tracks?

Hmmmm..... If you are talking about the level of gain that you use to boost your input signal then, yes. The higher the gain, the more information is picked up at source.
If you are asking if you can record with your input fader halfway down and then boost the level up to 0db on playback, then no - or at least-I wouldn't reccomend it. The reason is that the resulting recording will not be an accurate representation of how much gain you actually need.
It is also important to have all your input faders at 0db so that all the tracks you record are proportional. If you have, say 3 tracks recorded with the input faders at 0db and all tracks peaking around -6db and then one track with the input fader at -10db, and peaking at -6db; when you bring up that fader, the level is going to stick out like a sore thumb and will be pretty unmanageable.
I've actually never done this, but I don't think it's to be recommended.
