hi!
im in the plan of openning a small studio in uruguay, we plan to record for publicity and vocals for music, so we want a VERY good mic for this.

this is what we came to:

AKG C414
Neuman TLM 103
Shure KSM 44
Audio technica 4060

we wont have the chance to try them before buying them, so any input is well apreciated!

what are the PROs and CONs of these mics???

thancks,
juan

AKG C414 is a bright mic and seems to color the vocals quite a bit, in my experience with it.

Really, which version of the 414 are you referring to? I find some to be bright others not. Depends on which version.

maybe this a stupid question but ...

do you also have the rest of the signal chain in mind ?
Your sound wont be any better than the weakest element in your signal chain.
sending a tlm 103 trough a behringer micpre and soundblaster soundcard will sound worse than a 200$ mike trough a decent preamp/convertor.

About the mics ... use the search function on this forum. Lots of reviews and opinions will show up.

Any (or all) will get you started, I might include an RE 20 or SM7 in that mix especially if you want a mic that will fit multiple personalities (not schizo or nothing)

The TLM 103 is one of my favorite mics right now, because it's also sweet on vocals, in addition to many other applications. I also use an older 414, which I like a lot, but I haven't tested the newer version. Those are my two choices, without departing from your mic list.

Regards.

Wow...another forum...I never thought I'd see the day

hey thancks everyone!

i got a deal for a SM7 here in uruguay for 200$, maybe since its not a lot of cash i shoul get it together with the mic im ordering, is this a good deal?¿

Agreed, the 414 is not ideal for vocals, but it is great for acoustic instruments. Any of those other 3 would be great, but keep in mind that the new Neumanns are basically Sennheisers in disguise. I would lean toward the Shure or the AT. At has a newer tube style mic that is not too bad, I think it's the 3060.
