I'm trying to record a female singer with a harsh vox. Well its very smooth and full until she gets to the more dynamic parts of the song. I's like to spend less than $200.00 for a mic. I'm also looking a new pre amp to. Here's a short list of my ideas

MXL V69G (heards this was dark so it may help)
Audix om3 (thought a dynamic might work)

DMP3
SP VTB-1
JOE MEEK 3Q

please advise

My MXL v67g works great on my wife's voice, and was only $89 on eBay.... w/ shockmount and cable.... Ialbeit a cheap cable....)

It's a rather warm sounding mic in my opinion... and buying it helps the Chinese economy roll smoothly along!!!!

I like to use dynamics on harsh voices as well. If you've got a 58 kicking around, try it. I was having really good results on a very harsh male voice with an Audio-Technica mic, but I've forgotten the model.. Singer brought it with him.

The 3000b is a farily harsh mic to start with - so I suspect it would not work well with a female voice. The 57 or 58 can work with some voices, but I've always felt they are best for male "rock & roll" voices. I think your Audix, is a lower line mic that likely is not too "warm"

There are soooo many low cost mics now that I suspect you will get many different opinions. I have held good comments about the V69 but have not used one. I did get fair results on a "rough" female voice with a V67 - but we were going for a "rough sound"

If you could track down a used AT4033 it could work well (for many applications) but I don't know how many used 4033's are around or what they go for. The best low/mid priced mic I've used on female voices was an AT4047, but I don't you could find one for under $200.

I bet an SM7 might work. You could get a used one for around $200, probably, if you got lucky on Ebay. I got mine for $184.

4033 is an excellent choice, an re20 would be a good addition also

Yeah, ribbon mics are anything but bright. Is that cheap Beyer (M260?)ribbon microphone any good? I haven't found much information on it so far. Though cheap, it's more than 200.00.

Yes it is a good mic for vocals. You can find used ones on ebay for 200 to 300 often but another thing you can do is buy a known broken one with a bad ribbon and then buy Stephen Sank's DX77 mod for 120 dollars. I have one of each and I like the Sank modded one better. It would smooth out a harsh voiced singer I am pretty sure but I can't say for sure since I've only used it on my own voice and I don't have that problem.
