I want to be able to record both lyrics and some piano, trumpet, and possibly other band instruments for a competition with only one microphone. I'm planning to record them one at a time and using Adobe Audition to compile them into one. I did some research and saw that the Shure 58 is highly recommended. Can all mics be plugged into the PC directly? Do I need anything else besides a mic and Adobe Audition to start recording?

Thanks!

Hi,

If you want to do some recordings only with one mike, the I'd forget the SM58. Sm58 is an awesome microphone for live shows. For recording I'd go for a Large diaphragm microphone. I suggest you checkout the FAQ for microphone http://www.hr-faq.org/

You can't record directly through a PC, you need a preamp to amplify the signal of the microphone. You can get a small console for 60$, or for better sound you get a preamp. The preamp that most people like here (for the price)is the M-Audio DMP-3. (119$)
