I've been trying to figure out which mic I should spend money on, and then I thought perhaps I should narrow down my question: I want a good condenser that sounds good with piano and guitar, but more importantly, my vocals.
My style of vocals is high smooth and silky, and I was wondering it anyone knows any mics that would communicate that kind of voice well

If anyone is a silverchair fan, think of Daniel's voice in his later albums, ei neon ballroom and diorama, or in the dissociatives.

I'd like the mic to be able to be bought ON EBAY for around 400 dollars or less, it's ok if it goes a little over. And 300 is good too :D . I'm only 17, and I have a job, but money really doesn't flow all too well ;) I know that's not a lot for a great mic in many cases, but I'm on a teenager budget! :D

Can't help you with your question, but thught i should clear something out..

Thank God you are on a teenager budget...wait till you see how good it gets when you hit that ohhh so familiar Married man with good job but broke budget...and don't even get me started with the father of four budget...you will love it then!!!!

just on a note....im trying to run a mini show studio/basement type of thing here and i just have a $99 mic....good enough...so when you are willing and able to spend $400, even thou there are some other super more expensive mics...you will be able to get something real nice...

That's why I'm trying to gather all the gear I can get my paws on before it's too late! It's only a matter of time before I move out to my own place and start paying for things like... *dun dun dun* bills ! That won't be for a while, though.

Sorry I wouldn't be much help with the question, either. I haven't tried many mics. EDIT: I'm looking at an AT4050 for myself, though. The used ones are right in your price range. Check it out.

haha yeah thanks, I hope so. Then again, 400 dollars is about 70 hours of working on minimum wage for me, a few hours after school a few times a week. It really is no wall in the park, I'm just obsessed enough to spend all my time and effort on music :D

Word to that . Bump for the AT4050.

What's more important, the instruments or the vocals? Usually guitars and piano would need two mics - a stereo pair of neutral LDC or probably more likely small diaphragm. Why not get a cheapish stereo pair like the MXL 603 about $200 US for a pair on Ebay. Then try out a heap of cheap LDC on your voice and find out what suits. Or spend all your money on a reasonable mic that for your voice.

You'll definitly want two mics for the piano, and it will give you heaps more options for the guitar.

Cheers,

Dan

I agree, you'll really want 2 for the piano, and likely also for the guitar. As to your voice... is it very sibilant (harsh sounding S's). If it is, you may want to check out a dynamic mic like an SM7 or hell even a 57...

Try something in the cad m series, Cad M37 and M177 are pretty much the same mic, and the m179 is the multi-pattern version (They all can be had for well under $200, I got my m37 for about $60 with shipping). I have own all of them at some point and kept the m37(just because it supposed to made in the usa, the one I have is not a Global Audio one). I like this mic because it doesn't add much to my voice. If your is good it will give you back what you put in. Other mics I use for vocals is at4033(which I don't like on my voice), gt55 which is pretty smooth and somewhat bright, mxl v67, mxl 2003, at3035, and a few others. I suggest maybe get one of the cad mics for under $100 and use the rest to buy something like an at4040 or ADK hamburg which both add quite a pleasant sound to vocals. Buy the way what kind of preamps do have?

hey guys, thanks! For a preamp, I'm hoping to get a Rane MS1B, I've heard it's good and a bang for the buck kind of deal.

here's my voice on an at3035. Then again, there was no treatement or anything, so that definitely messes with the sound. Just to give you an idea of my type of voice.

And I would like a decent mic, and if there are good ones that are like 200, I'll get that, but I've heard the at4050 is good.

I actually getting a DMP3 for a preamp, if that really changes anything :p

My votes for mics...

AT 4040 at 200 used
Oktava MK012 (pair) at 200 used...

Done and done!

Jacob
