All right, i've read the faqs, questions and answers, and i might know whats going on with mics... but i was hoping someone will clerify just a couple more things for me.
Right now, i've got a little cheapy preamp.. Presonus Blue Tube DP.
Not a bad little unit, for being the first one i've ever owned.
It DID do what i wanted it to do - To get more gain into my pc without dragging all the noise of the mixer along with it.
However, i nearly have to have the thing cranked just to make it to 0db... and since it's cranked, the noise floor is something like -70db. Not bad for a cheapy, but i would prefer to NOT totally crank something just to make it to 0db. It's been my experience that things seem to work good only at 75% of they're advertised potential. =)
Now, what i'd like to see, is turning up the gain to maybe 45db at the highest, and still hit 0db. Furthermore, i'm using an SM 58.
So heres the question - If i buy a condenser mic, will it amplify itself to get where i want it to? Does a condensor mic actually add some gain... or are they used PRIMARILY for the ability to merely capture the sound at a very high quality?
