A friend of mine asked me: this Beta52 that you´re gonna bye works well for???. Bass/bass drum I answered. He said what else???. (he plays guitar I´m a drummer). I said that´s it.

That conversation makes me think about Beta57 or SM57 (does anybody knows where´s the difference?. I already have SM57) instead Beta52. I could use those for micing bass and the whole drumset.
What do you think should I go for the Beta52 or buy another 57??. My budget right now is enough for 1 Beta52.

Hope you can help on that tough decission.

I have gotten a quite usable sound out of a 57 on the bassdrum. But I warn you, that was with a lot of EQing on a 30 band EQ. Also though I have just thrown my Peavey 520i in front of a bass drum and had it work with little or no EQ. So thats really what you are paying for.

How about this. Go look at the Audio Technica ATM25. It costs less than a Beta52 and is by all accounts (according to the people on this board) a good bass drum mic. I am pretty sure you could use it on bass too. Another option is to look at the Audio Technica Pro25. It is only 70 dollars and I have used it or bass drum and floor tom, and bass and all have sounded pretty good.

SM57 and Beta 57 are modeled very similarly, except the Beta has some more expensive components ("NEODYMIUM MAGNET!") that does reflect a better sound, sometimes. On a snare drum? Maybe. On a guitar amp? Depends on the sound you want. Check it out for yourself. You should be able to hear the difference; the Beta's a bit more clean on both ends, a bit faster and smoother in its response...but it's still a 57 sound, if you know what I mean.

Have you thought about a CAD E-100 for kick drum? Cool little things, they are, and very good for kick drum. About the same price range as a Beta 52. Couple little stores have been rushing them out the door since they've been discontinued...

AKG D112, dude. use the 57's for toms and snare.-Richie
