I see here a lot of people use the MXL 603's i think for overheads on drums. Are these good mics for that? I was under the impression that the marshall mics weren't that good (i got that impression from some guy in a music store a month or so back). I'm looking for two overheads for my drums and another mic for my guitar amp. Then a final mic for vocals. I had origionally thought of using an SM58 untill i tried an MXL. There was so much more character and life to my voice i decided that maybe I would pick up that mic. That was untill the guy at the store said it was a pos. Of course i turned to the boards here and everone seems to like it.

What about the MXL 2003 that i see in american musical's cat.?

So far what i'm thinking is two 603's for overheads, another 603 for my amp, and a 2003 for vocals?
Maybe going all mxl is bad but they are a reasonable price for a starting home studio.

any thoughts.

I recommend the Oktava MC-012 over the Marshall MXL603S for drum overheads... the 603S can sound a little hash on cymbals. One of my favorite guitar amps mics is the Sennheiser MD421. And as far as vocal mics go... I recommend you audition some mics and buy the one YOU like best.

hey wang....you looking for the same price as those marshall's? whats your price range? you dont need people giving you $300 mic advice when your budget is $150.

Well. I was going to go for the peavy drum mic package for 250 plus a MXL2003 for vocals.

Then i started reading the boards again and found that I may be better off just using two overheads and one mic in the kick.

So ideally i was looking to spend no more than 400 on mics, however, seeing as how i do want a decent sound and some decent equipment (I hate buying garbage the first time and spending more to buy better stuff later) I may splurge and spend a little more. Or I have the option of getting a good instrument mic and vocal mic and put off the drum stuff seeing as how the guitar work is more important to me now. I would just like to have an idea of what i want to buy and what I want to save for.

I guess all in all either i'm looking in the price range of 150 per mic (average) or maybe a 200 dollar instrument and 200 dollar vocal mic. (give or take)
