what are some good quality cables for a decent price?
 
For XLR, or any situation really, Canare, Mogami, and Belkin come to mind.
The best bang-for-buck is DIY cables with one of these quality cables with Neutrik or Switchcraft conectors.
 
I use Mogami Neglex 2534. I custom made most of my cables to suit my needs. So a lot of my cables have different ends.
The ends I prefer over all others are gold plated Neutrik NC*MX. They are easy to solder, and the strain reliefs stay put, unlike Switchcraft style where the strain reliefs like to pull out from the XLR housing. Not to mention the NC*MX ends don't have tiny little screws you have to fiddle with during construction. Or if you suspect a cable of being bad you can check the solder joints quick and easy with the Neutrik NC*MX ends.
 
pulsartech.net has kick ass cables for the price...but be careful with the connections (there not bad if your carefull) they sound amazing if you take care of them and there only like 4 dollars for a cable
 
A cable is no where near "kick ass" if you have to be careful with the connections. In fact, based on this statement above, I can now wholeheartedly reccomend no one ever buy a pulsar cable.

Also, Belkin cable was reccomended above... Hopefully that was supposed to have been Belden.... Canre, Mogami and Belden are all good reccomendations. For XLR at the very least I would reccomend Neutrik connectors, but Switchcraft up until recently is what I reccomended for certain 1/4 or TRS connectors.

Making your own cables isn't really any cheaper unless you need a lot of them (30 or more) or need custom lengths. If you just need a dozen cables go down to GC and buy them. The only time I've found connector quality to be an issue is with live use/abuse.

i'd have to agree with that, except for the part about going to guitar center. you can find much better deals online. i would get a decent soldering iron and a roll of good solder to fix any connections that go bad on down the road. you can get alot of miles out of nearly any cable if you have the tools to keep it working right. even alot of cheapo cables can be reiliable if you inspect the connections and recut/resolder as needed. just stay away from molded connectors and ultra thin cable.
 
Actually, if you look in the right places you can find quality cables with quality connectors and good solders for a lot less than you might think. Markup on cables in most retail shops is outrageous:(
 
Actually, the Pulsartech stuff is fine, and a very good value for the $. I've been gigging for a couple of years with a pair of their Speakon speaker cables, with no issues whatsoever. They were about 1/3 the price of the "brand name" products. I've just ordered another pair, in a different length, and a mic cable just to try one of those. Any inquiries receive a prompt response, and they ship immediately.

They charge more than the norm for shipping, but the bottom line is still very good. And, their product selection is limited. But, if they have what you need, they're definitely worth trying.
