Bring Back Transfat!
I'm wanting to buy several more mic's to add to a SP C1 and a SM58.

When you think about the Marshall v67, is there anything in Rode's or Audio Technicas's line that's comparable? AT3035 or NT1? AGK C 2000B? What about the Oktava MC 319?

Same question for the 603s. Nady CM90?

Is Nady another junk brand like Samson?

My friend's got a buddy at Musician's Friend and I'd like to try to keep the mic purchases within their product line if I can.

Thanks for your patience,
Rick

I have an NT 1 and I sure wish I would have just saved the money until I could buy a real mic, but I don't know about the others

i was duped into the rode nt1, which was nice just a little too metallic so i processes it with mic modeler and it helped it a bit. finally i got a nice neumann and i still occasionally use the rode...the nt2 sounded pretty nice but i'd save some more before buying that. i'd say go for the marshall:)

you got this all all wrong.

"I'm wanting to buy several more mic's to add to a SP C1 and a SM58. "

What are you recording? You probably want to have 2~4 SM57s. So buy them used, i haven't bought a new piece of gear in 2 years. everything used, everything in mint condition, everythign for half price.

DONT buy anymore budget large diaphragm condensors. They all sound similar, and i hope that one salesman/company owner/spammer doesn't comes into here to rebutt that.

you want to buy a couple more mics? get a couple 57s, and probably a pair of condensors for stereo micing. probably on your budget this will be another C1. With 2 C1s, 4 SM57s, and 1 SM58, i dont think there is much you couldn't do on a nice homerecording level (unless you are using a phonics mixer, hehehe).

"DONT buy anymore budget large diaphragm condensors. They all sound similar, ................"

Damn, Kristian, that's a wide open comment if ever there was one. I mean, you could take ANY mic, plug it into a recorder, fart in front of it and "Wham, Bam, Thankyou Ma'am" you have a recorded fart................in that case ALL mics sound similar be they $40 Radio Shack or $4000 Nuemanns. Some just do it better at a given time than others.

Other than that, your advice is as good as it gets.

Peace............ChrisO

well, given they use the same materials, the same costs, the same casing(some of them) i will leave it up to you about how much different diaphragm A can sound in casing B or C.

DONT buy anymore budget large diaphragm condensors.

p.s.- unless its a C1 to make a stereo pair, then i wont kill you.

LMFAO..............that was a fast reply.

If we are refering to the totally "off the shelf" models, you are most likely correct. But owning a C1 and having compared it to a number of other mics now I have to presume that Studio Projects, along with a couple of other companies are selling mics that do sound different/better.

Rode are still sourcing more components than they care to admit from China, although their cases are now produced locally.

Let me first throw a dart at my favorite leftist, corporate conspiracy fanatic and say...I don't care if it's made in Peking or a Mexican prison! :D

I don't want to say that I'm not all that impressed with the C1, but I would like to experiment with a few other mics in the same class. Demoing at stores isn't a good situation for me as they don't always stock what I'm interested in and it really takes more time in MY studio to get a feel for individual characteristics.

I'm looking to cover drums, acoustic guitar, guitar amp and vocals.

I'll spend a few bucks to gain some insight. Hell, I bought a Darla and a Behringer mixer. Was able to sell both to a kid at work.

I'm sitting on a list from someone who's opinion I value: v67, pair of 603s, ATM25, and maybe a 57 or two. I'm not going to dump this line up in favor of something from Musician's Friend exclusively, but I thought I'd ask for input along those lines.

Anyway, any comments on the AT3035 or C2000B? Nady CM90?

this isn't about where it is made, this is about what it is made of. no matter how much bang for the buck you get, there is still a constant uphill increase in price and quality. and it goes like this. you buy two cheapies in a pair and they sound good. then you buy two more cheapies and it doesn't sounds better, just different. however you save up buy one higher quality mic and it sounds better and you are very happy.

Getuhgrip,

Go with what you feel is right.

Kristian,

That philosiphy you are espousing is so wrong it's almost funny.

Ausrock, Kristian.....valid perspectives, but not very informative. I'd really like to hear from anyone who's used these mic's. I'm so burned out from reading tech articles and salesmen telling me what I'm hearing. Sometimes it's helpful (if not refreshing) to get input from users who have no agenda.

Thanks,
Rick

grip,

what will you be micing and put them in order of what you need them for most.....

i dont think a v67 will give you a whole lot different than the C1...they sound pretty similar to me....

if you will be recording drums or acoustic instruments, a pair of 603's would be great......

there aint much you cant mic with a sm57, a C1, and a pair of 603's.....

also what other equip do you have (preamps,effects)...I think you told me already but Im too tired to use the search.....Depending on what you have, a new/different preamp or effect might serve you better than a mic....

A Little To Say...

As a note, a diaphram CAN sound unbelievably, drastically different in different housings... Although, the mics being talked about, they often are the same housing, but a different name and logo on it!

Also, you'd be AMAZED what different grills can do... Even having a grill! Have you ever seen the frequency response of an M49 with and without the grill?

The only pre I have right now is the TubeMP. Thinking about a Blue Tube. No FX yet. Kinda getting the message that plugins vs rack units are going to be my best bet. More reading, reading, reading!:D

Want to mic guitar amp, acoustic, and drums (6 track). Need a mic for vox that'll make me sound like....well like I'm singing...rather than choking to death! :p

Same condensers for overheads to mic acoustic?

I'm not sweatin' these choices...just curious about the alternatives.

Five years ago I couldn't have chosen between Kim Bassinger or Demi Moore. Now I know I should just wait for Brittany to turn 21!
Shania says I don't impress her much. :(

so, we should buy just one diaphram and switch housings as needed?......

ps that was a joke....

Some would argue changing the diapgrams, but that's not ver cost effective...

acoustic and drums...definitely a pair of mxl603's

staying budget conscious, id say an AudioTechnica ATM25 on the kick drum, your sm58 with the ball off on snare, and those 603's as overheads...really you could get away with just the overheads and the 58 with the ball off on kick and Id suggest that until you get the vocal sound you are after....did you hear sonusman's latest in the mp3 mixing clinic?..

4 drum mics, kick, snare, stereo overheads....

I dont think the blue tube is what you are looking for....id take that C1 somewhere and audition some pre's...JoeMeek maybe?.....

and I could barely wait for Britney to turn 18....you wait til shes 21 and she'll be like McDonalds - "millions and millions served".....

And I have a million little swimmers right here.

It is subjective to what you want. Go out and listen to some of them. Dont buy one because I told you to. Buy one because Alan said so. (his posts are like hypnosis).

P.S. The blue tube is just fine and Its better in combination with a tube compressor. You can have better but the price is good and If you have a good unit you have a good pre. If you dont like them You can always change out the tube.

I can just see the headlines........"Britney speared by Millions". Makes ya think doesn't it. LOL

RE,

Thanks for the info on grilles, etc........

Peace...........ChrisO
