The thought occured to me that I could run a bass through a digitech RP500 in bypass mode and that it would work as a DI. Does this seem to be right or is my thinking flawed? Thanks for any help you can give.

A DI normally takes the signal feeding it and turns it into a low impedance mic level signal. The RP500 will output a line level signal, so you would want to plug it into a line input instead of a mic input.

If your bass has active electronics, you can just plug it into a line input. The impedance issue doesn't come into play with active basses.

The RP500 probably doesn't have true bypass, so you are probably sending the signal into AD converters and back out through DA converters.
